I am new to music production. Anyone willing to help me out on some vocal recordings. I want to make sure my set up is correct. I can hear a slight hum/hiss once I get home… Im not sure if that is normal or if set up is incorrect.
If you’re hearing hiss/ hum, that likely means the input gain on the input is set high enough that it’s amplifying the electrical noise instead of just your voice! You might want to try dialing the gain back a little bit, and if you need more volume, either singing slightly louder or slightly closer to the mic!
You might find that your vocals feel a bit quiet with less gain - you might need to run them through a compressor to turn the loud bits down automatically, then turn the overall volume up (“make-up gain”) to get the volume you’re looking for. If there’s hiss, that makes the hiss louder too, but if you can record it cleanly with a lower gain setting, that might help!
