Trying to keep it live...but

Trying to keep this track as “live” as possible i.e. most instruments were played live - live drums, live bass, live guitars, live scratching etc as few samples as possible…but I’m getting the feeling now I should go all out and re-trigger the kick sound with an 808 or something and also re-trigger the snare for something with more of a 90’s hip hop feel?

Also thinking of getting a good female vocalist over the sections where the M.C isn’t…thoughts/suggestions people???

(P.S. Samples for re-triggering drum elements more then welcome if you feel you have something that might work well for the kit, or if you happen to be a string section and fancy replacing my dodgy synth strings at the start of the track that’d be awesome LoL)

Love the live scratching! Was that you? I enjoy the live sound, but am totally with you on re-triggering the snare for a 90s hip-hop vibe. I wonder if you could deploy that in some of the breakdowns and then bring the live snare back in when the full instrumentation kicks back in? Could add a new dynamic - just a thought

My vocals wouldn’t be right for this but I can imagine a female vocalist coming in with a hook would sound great. Good luck with it!

Thanks for the Feedback Susie, like the idea of maybe having 2 drum mixes, might give it an interesting dynamic alright. Live scratching was done by a character called G Frequency, I mixed his second album (still unreleased) so he kinda owed me one…

Here’s one of his tracks from his first album which I love feat. Voice

Really digging that Gareth!

Probably not an option now, but maybe using a side snare with a record on top like in this video could be cool in future. Or something like the Meinl ching ring. splashes work well too! Used bits like this a lot on gigs and sessions.

I did a session for a sample library a while back using some similar sounds. If i can track down the guy I did it for ill try and get you a copy.

Loving that Vinyl on the snare idea, hadn’t heard that one before will definitely give it a shot when recording next. Would love to check out that sample library you did as well if you can get your hands on it again

Hey,

I like where it’s going. I think the female vocals would be fitting especially if you’re going for something like this:

Otherwise, personally the live instruments on the intro sound quite vintage, so it kinda reminds me of the sample in T.R.O.Y. but I think it sounds a bit too clean - it could use a little “dirt”. Personally I would put some distortion and more reverb on the trumpet sound. Kinda like 50’s soul records, where everything is reverbed.

Best,
Jonas

Good call JJ…was thinking of putting the strings through an old vinyl emulator so you’ve convinced me! also washing the trombone in some long plate reverb, something like an EMT140 could be just the trick…funny you posted that video as well because one of the singers I work with does a beautiful cover of this and sounds really like Dawn Penn so she’ll probably be going on this track…bloody hell I think you’re psychic! Will repost when I’ve made those changes although don’t know when I’ll get a chance to record the singer next
