Introduce yourself

Hey Ant, welcome to the forum!

It’s really kind of you to offer free mixing and mastering - I’m sure if you stick a post in the Collaborate section, there’ll be lots of producers keen to take you up on that.

I’d also love to check out some of your music or works in progress if you don’t mind sharing? The Feedback Room is also a great place to get a wider pool of criticism and meet some likeminded people!

Give me a shout if you need a hand with anything

Hello!

Who am I?
My name is Kai Barrett - currently living in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. (South of Leeds, north of Sheffield for those that don’t know!) Originally from North London, producer/DJ. I am currently working at a local supermarket after finishing college earlier in the year - most of my time out of work is spent on music - whether that’s a trip to Pirate to practice mixing, working on tunes, or enjoying listening to music!

What do I create?
I’m mainly involved within the grime scene, I like to make instrumentals both for the DJs to play and MCs to spit over but instrumentals to just listen to as well! As well as that I’ve been making a lot more experimental stuff, even branching out into 160bpm/footwork-type music!

Which studio do I use?
Primarily the Leeds studio, as it’s the closest to me! When I’m back in London it varies on which is closest at the time - I’ve visited Greenwich, Hackney & Dalston so far and I’d expect to be visiting Tottenham too when I’m next down, which I’m looking forward to a lot!

What do I listen to?
Mainly grime, particularly the instrumental side - and a lot of old sets from old crews back in the day (Essentials, Grimesville, SLK, East Connection are some of my favourites).

I particularly enjoy the more “experimental” music made by people who branched out from the grime scene, in particular Murlo, Proc Fiskal & Darq E Freaker. As well as the sounds of people like Swindle, Silkie, Heny G etc. going into the “purple” side of dubstep.

Moving away from the 140bpm mark, I’m a huge fan of 80s/90s rnb/funk music (the rarer the better) and the new jack swing era (something that has been influencing quite a few of my productions recently)!

Looking forward to connect with everyone here!

Who am I?

I’m Dan. I am based in Bristol and have used Pirate for the last three years as a rehersal space.

What do I create?

Noise. Lots of it. I am a guitarist that is into Metal/Rock so the higher the gain the better. I’ve worked on a few pieces of music over the years but nothing that’s quite ‘done’. I look forward to sharing some music eventually!!

Which studio do I use?

I’m local to Bristol but plan on using Cardiff in the future.

What do I listen to?

A bit of everything. I’m really into MUSE but anything with a guitar will do me nicely.

I love to create RnB and Soul music and also have a huge love for singing jazz and blues songs. I am currently studying a professional musicianship course at Uni.

I am currently using the one in Tottenham but I used to go to Notting hill, Croydon and Earls Field a lot before

What do I listen to?

I love old school 90’s RnB and Hip-Hop but I pretty much listen to everything except for heavy metal and rock.

Who am I?

I’m RTPLS - I rap and produce. I kind of always wanted to learn how to produce, finally plucked up the courage a couple of years ago and signed up to a course. Two years later I’m gaining more confidence using logic, improving my skills and really enjoying the music maker experience.

What do I create?

R&B, Afrobeat, Afrohouse - I really enjoy rapping so all kinds of rap (drill, hip hop, grime etc).

Which studio do I use?

My fave is the Wembley branch, I like the acoustics but Tottenham is my local and I like the vibe there. The dalston studio is also one of my spots (some good eateries around there too).

What do I listen to?

A bit of everything depending on my mood, love D’Angelo. I love old music but also like listening to current stuff now and again to hear what the new guys are saying.

I’m here to listen, learn and converse with like minded people. I love listening to different ideas and discovering new sounds. I’ve been lurking on here for a while, I might as well get involved right!

Who am I?

Hey guys, I’m Zack. Been visiting Pirate Studios on and off for a few years now, so thought I’d join the community finally. Really keen to get involved and collaborate on stuff for 2021, hopefully we’re back in clubs at some point!

What do I create?

I DJ and produce mainly in the house/disco/garage spectrum (give or take) and I upload monthly mixes as well. We also occasionally put on nights in Bristol but they’re pretty small affairs for mates at the moment.

Which studio do I use?

The Bristol studio for me. Brilliant place.

What do I listen to?

Day to day it’s usually stuff like Frank Ocean, The Cure, Sade, but I’m open to any and all bangers and groovers really.

On a dancefloor I love DJ’s like Kerri Chandler (the GOAT), George FitzGerald, TSHA, Maribou State, Moxie, Peach, Shanti Celeste. Anyone who seamlessly moves between house, techno and disco has my vote.

Hey Zack, welcome aboard! You’ll definitely find some Bristolians here - we have an office there and of course, it’s the home of the very first Pirate.

And weirdly enough I live in the same flat that one of the founders used to live in, I’ve given him post once or twice - lovely guy! Bristol coming through strong haha

Who am I?

Hey guys, i’m Thomas! I work for pirate in content, handling a lot of the creative (visual) projects. Going to be super active on here from now on so i’m looking forward to to meeting you all!

What do I create?

So i mainly create visual art. Be it photography, video synthesis, or shorts - I love everything to do with cameras. I have a few visual passion projects going on at the moment, trying to flesh out some ideas for some longer form streamed content surrounding the current state dance music scene that i will (fingers crossed) be able to share with you in 2021 (if the world doesn’t explode). Obviously working for pirate, everyone is at least a little musically inclined… I have been in and out of bands since i can remember going mostly down the post punk/shoegaze/indie kind of routes, bedroom DJ for a good few years (although haven’t played out since i was like 19, eek), and i produce dance tracks - usually going down a breaky/minimaly/garagey/acidy kind of route. I will be posting mostly my music production work in here, maybe the odd mix here and there, and would love any and all feedback for my future projects! Definitely open to collaboration.

Which studio do I use?

I’m a SW London boy now (although still a northerner at heart) so i mostly find myself in the Earlsfield studios! Although. our Hackney studios are literally under our London office so i can imagine Dan will be prying me away from the recording studios to get some work done as soon as we are no longer working remotely.

What do I listen to?

Generic but… kinda everything! If i did have to choose a favourite genre, shoegaze has just always spoken to me on a deeper level. Talking Heads are my all time favourite band and i love everything David Byrne. I grew up with a lot of musical influences from my family, my Dad is a fan of all things 70s-80s-90s and introduced me to the majority of music i still listen to today, everything from the Gorillaz to Led zeppelin to OG Acid Trax. My Mam always played a lot of soul to me growing up, we would rarely go through a day without listening to some kind of Tamla/Motown greatest hits collection and we regularly frequented Northern soul events. My grandad has played bass his whole life, teaching me 12 bar blues aged 8 which ignited my passion for playing music.

Which studio do I use?

I use Ableton Live 10 and a collection of vst’s, recently mostly pigments, avenger, omnisphere and serum.

What do I listen to?
