Introduce yourself

Who am I?

My name is Andy, making music as Andy Rray. I have started making music again – I was making electronic music in the 80s and took a wrong turn somewhere…

What do I create?

I create ‘underground’ house music (I wish there were a better term to describe non-mainstream music than ‘underground’) inspired by the list of DJ’s and producers you see below. I use Ableton and Maschine. I have started to make video clips as well, primarily to help spread my music.

Which studio do I use?

Tottenham. I live nearby and was so happy when I saw the sign go up on the new build. I have been in to practice DJing and to mix a couple of tunes in the recording rooms and had planned quite a few more bookings …and then we had Tier 4, and then another lockdown. Eeeshhh. Patience is a virtue though.

What do I listen to?

I listen to and try to appreciate anything (I have tickets for ‘Meshuggah’ at the RAH in 2022!). Having said that, I am not too keen on sugary C&W or opera. One of the benefits of being older is being exposed to tons of music over the years.

I look to these DJS and producers for dancing and production inspiration (in no order): ItaloJohnson, Traumprinz/ DJ Metatron, Andrew Weatherall, Tin Man, Wata Igarashi, Fred P, Cinthie, Avalon Emerson, Dr. Dre, Terry Francis, Paul Woolford /Special Request, Roman Flugel, Jane Fitz, Scuba/ SCB, Craig Richards, Donato Dozzy, Archie Hamilton…the list goes on.

I and up for collaborations, either on productions or getting together and spinning tunes.

Who am I?

My name is Louis! I DJ & produce under the name CITIZEN. Semi-anonymous as most people tend to see my face on IG but I like the mystique of hiding your face even when I don’t do it that well.

What do I create?

I DJ what I’d guess is “Rave” music. Anything you’d find played in most underground parties across LDN and England, House, Techno, Garage, Hardcore (Happy and not so happy), Breakbeat, Jungle and Drum N Bass.

The key is all tempo all styles and to provide a good, healthy atmosphere for people to enjoy themselves and the music in.

Which studio do I use?

I used to travel all the way to Notting Hill from Highbury. Now I’m able to use Camden, Tottenham and Dalston interchangeably which is a blessing.

What do I listen to?
I grew on Disco, Reggae, Lovers Rock and early 2000’s Rnb. As soon as I got a household computer w/ access to youtube. I sacked all of that off in favour of my starting influence which was French Touch / French House. Music from the 90’s/early 2000’s. DaftPunk, SebAstian, DatA, Kavinsky, DJ Mehdi, Ed Bangar Records, Justice etc.

I then started listening to Dubstep & Grime. Unfortunately, I was about 14 so I couldn’t go raving properly, I spent 2 years of blissful ignorance hating on Skrillex in my room before going to my first illegal rave, which blew my head off. Around this time, a DJ club opened at school, I was the only one who went.

I learned about DNB and spent from 16 till now, learning the history. In the background, I was still listening to my old school music, alongside house/tech/UKG which in the end I think, has formed a bangin’ foundation to start DJIng from.

Welcome to Community, @EH78356240! Stoked to see some of our New York community start to join. Which NY studio do you prefer out of interest?

Thanks !

I used to go to the one on division st in Brooklyn a couple years ago but it closed down. So now I go to the one in ridgewood queens and I like it a lot.

I’ve also recently been to the new one in bushwick Brooklyn and I like the location as well. Very chill spots and great rates per hour.

Hello Lovely Sunny People

Who are we?

My name is Hal (aka Sunshine boy) representing the psychedelic Jazz/Indie band Strange Sun! We are a crazy 5-piece consisting of Rhythm/lead guitar, Bass, Drums, Saxophone, Synth and vocals!

What do we create?

We create an exciting and playful concoction of the groups best loved genres trying to bring the fun back to bands and gigs! Why write a three minute pop song when you can write an 8 minute track that takes you through the highs and lows of emotion, toys with the status quo of songwriting and rises in tension, drops the listener into a pool of sound, then catching them to lull them to sleep.

What do we listen to?
Jazz, Blues, Hip-hop, Jeff Buckley (he is his own Genre), Lo-Fi, Soul, R&B, Nu-Jazz, Alternative Rock, Grunge, Jungle, Break-beat!
Favourite movie = School Of Rock

Studio we use?
Manchester Ancoats

Peace out!

Who am I?

I’m Saliah. A British-Lebanese, evolving EDM producer, DJ and Creative Director for social change. I’ve been dj’ing since turntables were the standard and most of my career had been in the Drum and Bass scene — before going back to my roots and mixing Arabic and Arab house. My career highlights have been supporting the likes of Mobo award-winning Lady Leshurr and BBC introducing’s Miss Melody, plus opening the stage for Acid Arab, Shkoon, Omar Souleyman and Ammar 808.

What do I create?

In February 2020, I took a leap of faith to start learning music production, and fuse my love for Arabic music, UK G, Bassline, D&B and House to create electronic tracks that mostly results in Bass House (and some of the genres mentioned above). I use Double harmonic scales a lot and record most of my own Arabic vocal samples to be included in the tracks. I love using weird and classic vocal chops with heavy bass lines!

My goal is to have a debut release this year on record labels such as 3000 bass, Nightbass or NuVolve.

Always up for collaborating! You can check out my latest public tracks here: https://m.soundcloud.com/saliahofficial

Which studio do I use?

Mostly Nottinghill but have also used Earlsfield Lydden road.

What do I listen to?

Absolutely everythingggggg ranging from Metal, Grime, UKG, D&B, House, Arabic Rap, Classical Arabic, HipHop, Afrobeats, Dancehall, Funk…the list goes on! I feel it’s important to constantly listen to a wide variety of music and open our minds to all the possibilities.

Hi everyone I am new to the community so here is my introduction

Who am I?

I’m Leon, based in Manchester and got my first set Gemini Direct Drive turntables 17 years ago!

What do I create?

In my earlier days I used to DJ Trance but over the last few years my taste and direction has changed. Nowadays it is more Techno and Progressive. I’ve also started producing using Ableton and I know this is going to be challenging but lots of fun at the same time.

Which studio do I use?

Greater Manchester, Salford

What do I listen to?

Mixture of all sorts really. Mainly Techno & Progressive but I also like to listen to the old 80s Power Ballards and Synth pop (showing my age a little here) along with Indie, Indie Pop & Rock/Metal

Hey @LeonB - welcome to community! Feel free to have a look around.

We have a #feedback-room for you to gain valuable (you guessed it) feedback from other members of community on Work In Progress tracks - lots of Ableton/General production advice on offer!

In terms of your mixing - we have some #challenges live right now where you can bag some studio credit, and hopefully provide some creative stimulation during lockdown!

@Cal_Pirate cheers mate and I’ll keep and eye out on the future challenges and will no doubt be seeking the Ableton/General production advice within the Pirate community :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi all!

I’ve been with Pirate since the very beginning in Birmingham but new to this community! Ace to be here.

WHO AM I?
My main gig is as an indie-grunge-rock-pop artist called MeMe Detroit but I’m also a professional actor, a DJ and have recently gotten into film and soundtrack composing over the past 2 years.

WHAT DO I CREATE?
As an artist I mainly create music in the indie/alt rock area but have been known to genre bend and genre mash with some tracks. I love creating lots of different types of music. If it moves me or I feel inspired to go a certain way, I love just going with the flow and seeing what comes out.
Things I’m working on at the moment (aside from writing a new MeMe Detroit album with the band) are 2 soundtrack projects. One is of a very dark, ambient and suspenseful soundtrack/score nature, the other more gothic, Nine inch nails inspired rock. The last soundtrack I did, I was given the film Dead mans shoes as reference in the brief so that ended up having quite a folk feel to it and being full songs as opposed to soundscapes.
I also love a good vocal session and have been getting to do a fair few guest vocals on projects recently, coming up with harmonies, melodies and lyrics.

WHAT DO I LISTEN TO?
I listen to anything that moves me. I’m massive on melody and love a good melodic hook. My main true love is grunge, indie rock (My fave bands in the world are Radiohead & Foo Fighters) and metal but I’ve also got a massive soft spot for old skool trance, 90s & 00s hip hop as well as folk and house. I grew up on old skool ska (via a family generational hand me down box of vinyls) as well so have a real love for ska and reggae…although I’m yet to explore reggae in my writing tbf. I’m pretty sure it’ll happen at some point!
